OK, it’s a tenuous link but now I’ve got your attention… ![]()
Having recently been to the cinema to see the new Indiana Jones movie, one of the trailer previews was for a film called The Duchess, opening in September 2008. It’s based on the book by Amanda Foreman about Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, and stars Keira Knightley as the duchess.
Georgiana was famous for her menage a trois marital arrangements, for her beauty, her political campaigning and also for her love of gambling. I can’t wait to see the film – I was location spotting just watching the trailer! Kedleston Hall, a favourite National Trust property of mine, features in the production.

I’m interested to see how the film deals with Georgiana’s unhappy marriage and her romance with Charles, 2nd Earl Grey.

Fantastic! Had no idea about this, will look forward to seeing it. Georgiana was unboubtedly one of the great characters of her time and there’s definitely a lot of material there for a film.
The book is a great read, must dig it out again.
Looks like The Duchess will be a good film. I have to say, Keira Knightly was a very good Elizabeth Bennett and I’m sure she’ll do a good job as the Duchess.
How was the Indiana Jones film?
The film was good, a little far fetched in places, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment.
Wasn’t Georgiana the person Diana was compared to? Leader of fashion, etc?
Film looks good – as much as I could see in the candlelight!
That’s right (and Diana was a descendant). I once read an interesting article on the parallels between their two lives. Quite uncanny how many similarities there were.
Bound to increase visitor numbers for Chatsworth etc this autumn!
This is a test
